Our local weather conditions in Sebastian have changed slightly over the past 24 hours. We are now under a Tropical Storm Warning as Helene is expected to intensify into a hurricane by Thursday.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect when sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph or greater from a tropical cyclone are anticipated within 36 hours. Storm surge and flooding are potential hazards associated with these conditions.

Early projections indicate that Sebastian could receive up to 4 inches of rain over the next 48 hours from Tropical Storm Helene as it grows into a hurricane.

Wind speeds on Wednesday in Sebastian are expected to reach 15-20 miles per hour, with gusts up to 30 miles per hour. Tropical storm conditions are expected to arrive on Thursday, which could bring sustained winds of 39 mph or greater.

To reduce property damage, residents are strongly advised to bring loose outdoor items, including toys, sports equipment, and lawn furniture, inside or secure them firmly.

Questions about storm shutters have been circulating in the community. As we cannot provide definitive guidance on this matter, it’s recommended that residents contact their insurance companies for specific advice.

It’s important to avoid trimming trees or bushes now, as debris from these activities can clog stormwater drains and contribute to flooding.

Over the next couple of days, Helene will be moving through an environment of low vertical wind shear, ample environmental moisture, and over waters of high oceanic heat content.

Tropical Storm Helene is rapidly intensifying as it moves northward along Florida’s west coast in the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center predicts that winds could reach 120 miles per hour within the next 36 hours, making Helene a Category 3 hurricane.
