Hurricane Milton continues to intensify, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. Moving east at 7 mph, Milton is approximately 780 miles from Tampa, Florida.
“Milton is forecast to be a major hurricane when it reaches the west coast of the Florida Peninsula midweek,” The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.
In Sebastian, the National Weather Service (NWS) said Hurricane Conditions Possible, with wind speeds between 74 and 95 mph, when Milton passes through north of our area. The NWS forecast is currently showing wind speeds of 25 to 35 mph for our local area, but that can change.
The wind speeds in Sebastian will also be determined by the intensity of Hurricane Milton when it makes landfall in the Tampa area. The current path shows the hurricane crossing the state and potentially passing through Cape Canaveral. In anticipation of potential impacts, Brevard County has declared a State of Emergency.
Additionally, Milton’s trajectory is subject to fluctuations. Earlier today, the storm’s projected path shifted southward near Melbourne. The NHC emphasizes that the path will continue to change.
Preparations
To minimize property damage, residents should bring in or securely fasten outdoor items such as toys, sports equipment, and lawn furniture.
There has been community discussion about storm shutters. As specific guidance varies, residents are encouraged to contact their insurance companies for tailored advice.
It’s crucial to refrain from trimming trees or bushes at this time. Debris from such activities can obstruct stormwater drains and increase the risk of flooding.”
