Despite Hurricane Helene’s near approach to Florida’s West Coast, Sebastian, Fellsmere, and Vero Beach have been primarily hit by strong winds, with minimal rainfall. However, additional outer rainbands are expected to impact our area tonight.
A drive through Sebastian surrounding areas found little damage, primarily consisting of fallen palm fronds. Rainfall has been significantly lower than forecast by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), and winds have remained below tropical storm strength. There was a tornado reported this morning in Vero Beach. All Indian River County Schools are open Friday.
However, the storm’s outer rainbands are still expected to bring additional precipitation and gusty winds. Given its rapid movement, the remnants of Hurricane Helene should clear out of Sebastian by tomorrow.
The National Weather Service has increased the rain chance to 70% for both Friday and Saturday, potentially impacting weekend plans.
Currently, a Tornado Watch and Flood Watch remain in effect for our area. A High Surf Advisory will continue until Friday morning.
Here’s a brief overview of the forecast:
- Tonight: Tropical storm conditions expected. Some of the storms could be severe tonight, with wind gusts as high as 40 mph. The low will be 76 degrees. 70% chance of rain.
- Friday: High of 92, low of 76 degrees. 70% chance of rain. Southwest winds 15-20 mph with 35 mph gusts.
- Saturday: High of 92, low of 75 degrees. 70% chance of rain. Possibly thunderstorms after 2pm. Southwest winds 5-10 mph.
- Sunday: High of 91, low of 75 degrees. 40% chance of rain. Southwest winds at 5 mph.
On the seven-day NHC map of the Caribbean, another developing system can be seen south of Cuba, the same region Helene recently passed through. However, this new system is expected to dissipate. Farther out in the Atlantic, another system is already turning northward and heading back out to sea.
