Indian River County voted 3-2 against a countywide mask mandate on Tuesday, July 14, 2020. If passed, it would have required everyone to wear a face-covering where social distancing is not possible, in all businesses and buildings in Indian River County.
Commissioners Peter O’Bryan and Susan Adams were in favor of the legal requirement. They feel that action needs to be taken to slow the spread of the COVID-19.
Commissioners Joe Flescher, Tim Zorc, and Bob Solari all voted against the mandate, saying they support wearing face masks for health reasons. However, they were opposed to a governmental mandate.
St Lucie, Martin, and Palm Beach counties have already passed countywide mask mandates, to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Indian River County has already required that mask be worn by employees at grocery stores, restaurants, gyms, food service businesses, salons, retail establishments, while on public transportation, and inside of IRC government facilities.
They are strongly encouraging the public to do the same. However, it is not a requirement in public places.
